Krysta Younghas had her eye on the historic retail space at 1014 Broadway for eight years. Now she's moved in and plans to open Sassie Cakes soon in the ARCH-ownedstorefront.
"I'm very excited to be downtown," said Young, who opened Sassie Cakes on Lower Huntington Road in February 2014 but needed more space. "...and to give new life to a building that's just been sitting."
Young has set Sept. 16 for the grand opening.
ARCH bought the building, listed in News-Sentinel archives as once an A&P grocery, next to the old Canton Laundry building in late 2011. Tucked between the former laundry that now houses Hedgehog Press's fine art print shop The Hedge and William L Lupkin Designs stained glass, a paper sign in the window announces the coming business.
Young was in the kitchen Saturday applying edible gold to a white buttercream-iced cake that in a few hours would be front and center at a wedding reception. Her husband, Mark, handles the deliveries and was checking on details before he left.
The new space will continue to feature cookies made by Amber Westerman. Her Sweet Girly Girl Cookies uses her great-grandmother's sugar cookie recipe and she hand-pipes royal icing on all sorts of creative designs including caps and gowns for graduations, personalized rabbits for Easter, and paw prints for a thank you to Northeast Indiana Veterinary Emergency and Specialty Hospital.
Westerman started her business about two years ago from her house and joined Young last summer to offer cookies through Sassie Cakes.
Young, a New Mexico native and self-described Army brat who met her husband at Indiana University, plans to add more sweet treats to the new location. In addition to the cookies and wedding cakes, she wants to have ready-to-sell cupcakes, edible cookie dough and small cakes that will lend themselves to offering a variety of flavors. Her favorite flavor would be a peanut butter cup cupcake while raspberry with cream cheese is a customer favorite.
The new space has some architectural details – exposed brickwork and a painted tin ceiling – from its past and a sign that reflects its future: "Let them eat cake."
